Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, has died at the age of 90, with his family fixing Sunday, September 13, 2026, for his burial in Yola, Adamawa State.

Tukur, a former governor of the old Gongola State and a prominent businessman and public administrator, died in Abuja on Saturday, September 12, just three days before his 91st birthday.

His son and Secretary to the Adamawa State Government, Awwal Tukur, confirmed the burial arrangements in a statement issued in Yola.

According to him, the late elder statesman will be buried after funeral prayers at the Lamido’s Palace by 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.

“The late elder statesman will be laid to rest on Sunday, 13th September, 2026, after funeral prayers at the Lamido’s Palace by 10:00 a.m.,” Awwal said.

Born on September 15, 1935, Tukur had a long career spanning public administration, politics, business and international economic advocacy.

He began his public service career at the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he served as General Manager from 1975 to 1982, before moving into elective politics.

In 1983, he was elected governor of the old Gongola State, which comprised present-day Adamawa and Taraba states. His tenure was, however, cut short by the military coup of December 1983.

After leaving office, Tukur expanded his activities in the private sector, founding BHI Holdings, popularly known as the DADDO Group of Companies.

He later returned to federal service as Minister of Industries between 1993 and 1995 during the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha.

Beyond Nigeria, Tukur played a prominent role in African business and economic policy. He served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and also chaired the NEPAD Business Group, while holding advisory roles with several international trade and economic organisations.

In March 2012, he was elected National Chairman of the PDP with the backing of then-President Goodluck Jonathan.

He remained in office until January 2014, when he resigned amid prolonged internal disagreements and factional disputes within the party.

Tukur, who held the traditional title of Tafidan Adamawa, was also a presidential aspirant during the Third Republic.

In recognition of his service, he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, while the Republic of Togo also honoured him with the Commander of the Order of the Mono, COM.

He is survived by two wives and 18 children, including Awwal Tukur, Secretary to the Government of Adamawa State, as well as grandchildren and other relatives.

President Bola Tinubu has mourned the elder statesman, describing his death as a loss to the country.

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri also declared three days of mourning in honour of the former governor and PDP national chairman.

Tukur’s death has continued to draw tributes from political leaders and associates who have highlighted his decades of service in government, politics, business and continental economic development.
