The immediate past National President of the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, Atiku Jafar, has written to the Governor of Taraba State, Arch. Darius Dickson Ishaku, appealing for His Excellency’s subvention to enable candidates of the Nigerian Law School (NLS) from the state meets their NLS registration fees.

In a letter dated 30th of December, 2019 addressed to the Taraba State Governor, and made available to TheNigeriaLawyer (TNL), Jafar says:

“As Your Excellency is aware, the cost of legal education in Nigeria and the exorbitant fees of the Nigeria Law School call for intervention of government, particularly state governments, across the federation to enable average poor and middle-class indigenes afford legal education and give back to the society. Tarabans, like their colleagues from other states, used to be beneficiaries of the state government’s intervention in this respect, until prior to Your Excellency’s inception.”

Jafar laments that unlike many states, the government of Taraba State has not attended to the NLS bursary issue and that will make it difficult for many Taraba law students due for the January 2020 batch to proceed to the Nigerian Law School.

Jafar, therefore, urges the governor to intervene. “Sir, your earnest intervention herein will demonstrate Your Excellency’s commitment to prioritise education as a foundation for sustainable development and will encourage the students, as potential lawyers, to attain this noble academic objective and give back to the state.” He concluded
