A gang of heavily-armed hoodlums met with misfortune on Tuesday when their vehicle fell into a ditch while they were attempting to escape from a joint team of the Anambra State Police Command and local vigilante operatives. The incident occurred during a routine patrol in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement released by the Anambra State Police Command, the joint security team engaged the armed gang in a shootout after accosting them on a yet-to-be-determined mission. The pursuit ended when the hoodlums’ vehicle, a Toyota Highlander SUV with registration number Lagos GGE 408 GZ, ran into a ditch. Two members of the gang were arrested, and four AK-47 rifles along with 219 rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene.

In a separate incident, another joint security team comprising the police and local vigilante intercepted a Toyota Venza Car with registration number Lagos EKY 746 JB at Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area. The driver of the vehicle fled upon sighting the security team, abandoning the car. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 34 live cartridges.

Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, commended the discipline and operational effectiveness of the joint security teams involved in both operations. He directed the Rapid Response Squad at Awkuzu to take over the investigation of the cases, which appear to be related.

CP Adeoye reiterated his commitment to making Anambra State an inhospitable environment for criminal gangs, warning that those who persist in their activities will face dire consequences.
