Arbitration has bright future in Nigeria – Candide-Johnson

The commercial arbitration moot competition, which held at the Lagos Court of Arbitration, Lekki, Lagos, was organised by the LCA-Young Arbitrators Network, and had 12 law firms, each represented by a team of four young arbitrators, competing. The competing law firms included Aelex, which took on Babalakin & Co.; Sterling Partnership, which competed against Strachan Partners; Banwo & Ighodalo, which took on Dikko & Mahmoud; and Punuka Attorneys and Solicitors, which slugged it out with Moshood Shehu & Associates. Others were Perchstone & Greys which competed against SPA Ajibade & Co.; and Streamsowers & Kohn which argued against Wole Olanipekun & Co. Speaking on the sidelines of the competition, Candide-Johnson, whose law firm, Strachan Partners, emerged the first runner-up behind Banwo & Ighodalo, said he was excited at the performance of the young arbitrators and the future of arbitration in Nigeria. Candide-Johnson said, “I’m extremely impressed; I should say that so impressed that I had to excuse myself since one of the teams that made the final was from my own law firm. “So, it’s what I expect. I expect that if you put young people through, you tell them what to do, if you guide them they can make tremendous success. This has been missing in many professions in Nigeria. The older ones don’t pass on their skills and experience to the younger ones. It is fundamental to the growth of our country, and that’s what we are trying to do here.” He said for Nigeria to improve its ranking among arbitration-friendly jurisdictions around the world, efforts must be geared towards the training of young arbitrators. On his part, Fagbohunlu said, “I’m certainly encouraged. These are very young lawyers and students as well and I have been amazed at the quality of their deliveries given their relative young age at the Bar and experience in arbitration and in particular the students that we saw, we were quite impressed with their performance. Obviously, there are areas where a little mentoring still needs to be done. But I think that the LCA-YAN has done a very good job putting this together and I think the more this continues, the more we are likely to see significant improvement in the skills of our young arbitrators.” The Co-Chairman of the LCA-YAN, Prince Alex-Iwu, explained that the objective of the competition was to promote international arbitration among young and aspiring arbitration practitioners, adding that the aim of the competition was met. “It’s impressive, because we didn’t know we could get the quality of participants. For instance, the teams had to make oral arguments in support of their positions but they also had to prepare routine argument in document records that we call the memorials. And some teams have brilliantly drafted memorials. So, the objectives are being met in the sense that those that are making the arguments and those who prepare the briefs show sound understanding of some of the basic ideas in international arbitration.” Punch]]>
