The governorship candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, in the Osun State governorship election, Adebayo Simon Adewale, has withdrawn from the race and declared support for the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party.

Adewale announced his withdrawal on Thursday, barely two days before the August 15, 2026 governorship election, directing members of the APM and his supporters across the state to vote for Adeleke.

He said the decision followed extensive consultations with party leaders, supporters and other stakeholders and was taken in what he described as the overriding interest of Osun State.

According to Adewale, his withdrawal was not prompted by pressure or personal considerations but by his assessment that Adeleke should be allowed another term to consolidate on the achievements of his administration.

“After a deep reflection and extensive consultations with party leaders, supporters and stakeholders, I have decided to withdraw from the Osun State governorship race,” he said.

“This decision is not borne out of pressure or personal interest. Rather, it is a conscious choice to place the interest of Osun State above personal ambition.”

Adewale said he had carefully assessed the political situation and concluded that Adeleke deserved another opportunity to continue in office.

“Having carefully assessed the situation, I believe Governor Ademola Adeleke deserves another term to consolidate the progress his administration has recorded,” he said.

The APM candidate consequently declared his full support for the governor and urged his political supporters to follow suit.

“Accordingly, I hereby declare my full support for the re-election of His Excellency, Senator Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, and I call on all my supporters, members of the Allied Peoples Movement, and the good people of Osun State to join me in supporting his re-election,” Adewale said.

He maintained that politics should ultimately be centred on service to the people rather than the pursuit of individual political ambition.

According to him, backing Adeleke would, in his assessment, advance peace, stability, development and the collective interest of Osun residents.

“This decision is about the future of Osun State. Politics should always serve the people, and today, I have chosen the path that I believe will best advance peace, stability, development, and the collective interest of our state,” he added.

Adewale’s withdrawal comes in the final stretch of political activities ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

Adeleke, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the Accord Party, is one of the candidates cleared for the poll.

The withdrawal means Adewale will no longer actively pursue his governorship bid, although his name may remain on the ballot depending on the electoral timelines and applicable provisions governing candidate withdrawal.

His decision also adds another dimension to the political alignments taking shape ahead of the election, with the former APM candidate now directing his political structure and supporters towards Adeleke’s re-election bid.
