St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, has emerged as the grand champion of the inaugural UK-Nigeria Debate Competition, defeating top schools from both Nigeria and the United Kingdom in a fiercely contested event held virtually on June 19, 2025.

The competition, a first-of-its-kind collaborative initiative between Bring It On Africa and Debate Mate UK, aimed to foster cross-cultural engagement and build critical thinking, oratory, and reasoning skills among young students across both nations.

Representing Nigeria were Britarch Schools and Sure Start School (both from Abuja), St. Augustine’s College (Jos), and St. John Vianney Science College (Ukwulu). Their UK counterparts included Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

After a series of rigorous preliminary rounds, St. John Vianney Science College advanced to the finals, having bested both Maghull High School and Central Foundation Girls’ School in the semifinals. The final saw an all-Nigerian face-off against St. Augustine’s College, Jos, where the Anambra-based school clinched the championship title.

The victorious team comprised Chibueze Jennifer, Obiokafor Catherine, Eneoli Benjamin, and Onwuegbusi Valentine, under the mentorship of coach John Onuigbo, with strategic guidance from Chiagozie Udorji.

“This is a dream come true,” said standout debater Chibueze Jennifer. “The level of competition was intense, especially going against top UK schools. But our preparation paid off. This proves that Nigerian students, when given the platform, can compete globally.”

Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Obimma, Director of St. John Vianney Science College, widely known as Fr. Ebube Muonso, celebrated the achievement as a testament to the school’s core values of excellence and global relevance. “Our students have not only showcased academic brilliance but also their ability to engage in critical global conversations. This win affirms our vision,” he stated.

As part of their prize, St. John Vianney Science College will represent Nigeria at the extensional Grand Finale in London this December, where they will debate live, in-person, against UK teams on pressing global topics.

St. Augustine’s College, Jos, who placed second, also secured a spot in the London finals, while Shireland High School (UK) came third in the overall standings.

The debate competition covered global issues ranging from technology and environment to history and policy. Organizers hailed the event as a success in fostering mutual understanding and critical thought among youths across both nations.
