The Anambra State Police Command has explained why it is impounding vehicles with tinted windows, including those whose owners present tinted glass permits.

The command said the ongoing enforcement exercise is not intended to cause unnecessary hardship to motorists but is part of security measures aimed at preventing criminals from using tinted vehicles to evade identification.
The exercise, which recently commenced across the state, has affected vehicles with and without tinted glass permits, causing delays and raising concerns among motorists.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the operation was introduced to verify the authenticity of tinted glass permits and detect forged or fraudulently obtained documents.
He said the command was also targeting unregistered vehicles and vehicles with concealed, covered or defaced number plates.
According to him, the exercise is designed to enforce compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations, while also preventing criminal elements from exploiting such violations to commit crimes.
“The Anambra State Police Command wishes to clarify that the ongoing impounding of vehicles with tinted glasses, whether or not the owners present tinted glass permits, as well as unregistered vehicles and vehicles with concealed, covered, or defaced number plates, is part of a security-driven enforcement exercise,” the statement read.
“The exercise is aimed at verifying the authenticity of tinted glass permits, identifying forged or fraudulently obtained permits, ensuring due process, enforcing compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations, and preventing criminal elements from exploiting such violations to evade identification and perpetrate crime.”
Ikenga said the command regretted the inconvenience caused to law-abiding residents but insisted that the operation had become necessary because of prevailing security concerns in the state.
He said criminals had increasingly been using vehicles with tinted windows and unclear number plates to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts.
“While the Command regrets the inconvenience this may cause to law-abiding residents, the exercise has become necessary in view of prevailing security concerns and the increasing use of such vehicles by criminals to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts,” he added.
The police appealed to residents and motorists in Anambra State to show understanding, patience and cooperation while the enforcement lasts.
The command assured the public that the exercise is being carried out in the interest of safeguarding lives, protecting property and improving public safety across the state.
