Anambra State Police have rescued two teenage girls and arrested four suspects following a N200,000 ransom payment in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out on Wednesday, November 27, led to the capture of 19-year-old Ifechukwu Ibesimako and three accomplices.
According to police investigations, Ibesimako, a resident of Aboji Village, Oba, and his gang members orchestrated their kidnappings through social media platforms. Their modus operandi involved befriending unsuspecting victims online before holding them hostage and demanding ransom from their families.
The breakthrough arrest also unveiled previous criminal activities by the gang, including a similar case where a female victim had secured her release through ransom payment months earlier.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrests to newsmen. He revealed that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has directed the transfer of all suspects to the Anti-Kidnapping/robbery Squad for thorough investigation.
The Commissioner also issued a cautionary message to young people about the dangers of social media relationships, emphasizing the need for vigilance when interacting with online acquaintances.
