*As Over 800 Shops Already Sold To Traders In The Unfinished Structures

The Anambra State government has ordered the demolition of two four-storey buildings located at Amobi Street in Onitsha South Local Government Area.

The decision comes in the wake of recent building collapses in the area, which claimed the lives of over eight people and injured at least 26 others between February and March.

According to Chief Emeka Orji, Chairman of Onitsha South Local Government Area, the two buildings, housing over 800 shops designed for commercial purposes, have already been paid for by traders before the completion of the project. However, inspections revealed that one of the buildings had a collapsed decked portion due to the use of poor and substandard materials. Both structures were found to have cracked pillars and weak decking, prompting the demolition order.

Despite the state government’s order to stop work on the projects about a month ago, construction continued. The demolition marks were allegedly removed, and heavy business activities commenced on the ground floor of the buildings. Contractors were even seen constructing another set of slabs for the fifth floor, disregarding the demolition order.

Chief Orji emphasized the need to prioritize the safety of the people and prevent further casualties resulting from building collapses. He stated that all building plans must receive personal approval from the governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, before construction can begin. The two buildings in question did not have the governor’s approval.

In the past three months, Onitsha has witnessed three building collapses, resulting in a total of eight deaths.
