The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has warned against politicizing judicial issues, urging Nigerians to rely solely on constitutional provisions rather than emotions or political sentiment when interpreting the law.
Speaking to reporters in Lagos after the public presentation of the book “Tribulations and Trophies: Bola Ajibola in His Own Words”, Fagbemi emphasized the need for restraint, especially regarding the controversy surrounding the emergency rule in Rivers State and the appointment of Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ibas as Administrator.
Addressing the issue, Fagbemi said:
“When matters like this arise, people should carefully read and understand what the law says. It’s not about sentiment or politics but about basic facts. Nigerians should resist interpreting the law based on political leanings. Let’s stick to the law.”
He explained that he had deliberately avoided taking sides, despite being a part of the government, because the matter is already before the courts.
“Since the issue is under judicial scrutiny, let’s allow the judiciary to make its pronouncement without unnecessary commentary,” he added.
The event celebrated the life and legacy of the late Prince Bola Ajibola, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, former Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague, and founder of Crescent University, Abeokuta. Ajibola, who also served as President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) before his appointment as AGF in 1985 by then-military President Ibrahim Babangida, passed away on April 8, 2023, at the age of 89.
Fagbemi praised Ajibola as a reformer and a man of integrity:
“He was a man of sterling qualities and impeccable character. In the Ministry of Justice, the records of his contributions to law reforms and institution building are indelible. Every lawyer should aspire to emulate him.”
Also speaking at the event, former President Olusegun Obasanjo lauded Ajibola’s lifelong commitment to excellence and hard work, sharing personal anecdotes of their early years together.
“Bola was dedicated, humorous, and determined. His legacies are visible and worth emulating,” Obasanjo said.
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) described Ajibola as a “symbol of truth, trustworthiness, vision, and hard work,” noting his unwavering belief in the Nigerian project until his death.
“I worked closely with him and can attest to his diligence, promptness, and forthrightness,” Osinbajo said.
Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) also paid tribute, calling Ajibola a “giant in the legal profession” and a man of excellence.
“He stood against unfavorable policies and always found opportunities amid adversity. He was a consummate professional and leader,” Fashola noted.
