A source close to Abusafiah, who requested anonymity, told FIJ on Monday that the Palestinian leader was taken from his Abuja residence by heavily armed officers.
“They have not told us his offence. They just came to pick him up at his residence in Abuja,” the source said. “As I am talking to you, we do not know where exactly he has been taken to. All we know at the moment is that he is in detention somewhere.”
The source added that the Palestinian Embassy in Nigeria has not yet issued a statement regarding the arrest. “All we know is that he is being accused of terrorism-related activities. Everything seems strange and vague at the moment,” the source said.
Born on August 23, 1973, Abusafiah is a Palestinian-Nigerian who has lived in Nigeria for several decades and holds a Nigerian passport. He has been known for advocating peace in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
On Monday afternoon, FIJ reached out to the Palestinian Embassy in Nigeria for comment on Abusafiah’s detention but had not received a response by press time.
