An Enugu State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Enugu, on Thursday, granted three suspected rapists, Chukwuebuka Ugwo, Onyekachukwu Eze and Chimezie Ogbodo, bail in the sum of N500,000.

The accused, who hail from Obeagu Awkunanaw in the Enugu South Local Government Area of the state, were arraigned on July 4, 2019, for allegedly raping a married woman and remanded in prison.

They were accused of entering the victim husband’s compound and met his wife, a mother of three, and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her in the presence of nine others.

But when the matter came up on Wednesday, the presiding magistrate, Alex Amalu, granted the suspects bail in the sum of N500,000 each and one surety each in like sum.

The court said the sureties shall be civil servants not below the grade level 15 in the state civil service or community leaders with current tax clearance certificates or built-up property with Certificates of Occupancy and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The magistrate said the accused were granted bail in order to reconcile with the victim’s family so that the matter, which was adjourned till October 10, could be discharged.
