Templars’ Senior Partner and former Chairman of the NBA Section on Business Law, Olumide Akpata has called on Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association (“NBA”) to endeavour to convoke conversations that address the various intractable problems facing the NBA, which would appear to prevent the Association’s voice from being heard and respected by the wider Nigerian society as was the case in times past.

Mr. Akpata was speaking yesterday at a Public Lecture organised by NBA Okitipupa Branch as part it’s 2020 Law Week. He commended the Okitipupa Branch for selecting the topic, “Security as the Bedrock of a Prosperous Nation: Rejigging Nigerian’s Constitutional Federalism” which he described as timely. The Lecture was expertly delivered by Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN and discussed by Professor A. A. Idowu of the Faculty of Law University of Ife.

Mr. Akpata however urged NBA Okitipupa and other Branches of the Association to begin to closely interrogate the many issues militating against Lawyers and the Association. According to him, there is near consensus that the Nigerian Bar Association has not worked for the majority of its members particularly young lawyers who feel increasingly alienated from the Association and often call to question its continued relevance to them and their careers. Mr. Akpata was of the view that it is only after the NBA puts its house in order that it can regain its once highly revered position as the voice of the voiceless and the conscience of the nation.

Mr Akpata who had earlier on joined other guests at the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the proposed NBA Okitipupa Bar Centre, congratulated the Branch for embarking on such an ambitious and worthwhile project which he pledged to support with the sum of One Million Naira.
