President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has petitioned the State Security Service (SSS) over the circulation of a statement allegedly attributed to him in which he purportedly warned that Northerners would “suffer the most” if President Bola Tinubu lost the 2027 presidential election.

Akpabio denied making the statement and asked the security agency to investigate what his office described as the creation and coordinated dissemination of a false, inflammatory and divisive publication capable of provoking regional resentment and portraying him as threatening people in Northern Nigeria.
His Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, disclosed the development in a statement on Wednesday.
The petition, signed by Akpabio’s Chief of Staff, Chinedu Akubueze, said a graphic bearing the Senate President’s photograph and official designation had circulated on Facebook and other digital platforms with the purported quotation: “Northerners, you will be the ones to suffer the most, if you allow Tinubu to lose the election.”
Akpabio’s office, however, insisted that no evidence had been produced showing that the Senate President ever made the statement.
“The President of the Senate did not make this statement. No date, venue, speech, interview, video, audio recording, official statement or credible news report has been produced to authenticate it,” the petition stated.
According to the petition, the graphic carried no identifiable publisher’s mark or verifiable source and appeared to have been manufactured and presented to the public as an authentic quotation from the Senate President.
Akpabio’s office argued that the material was capable of misleading members of the public, generating hostility against him and inflaming regional tensions by creating the impression that he had threatened Northerners over the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
The petition identified some individuals it described as among the earliest traceable amplifiers of the graphic on Facebook.
It named Abdullai Musa, who allegedly posted the material in the “Sheik Muhammad bin Uthman group 24,” as well as Uzoma Chilaka, whose post reportedly reproduced the graphic alongside commentary attributed to him and Engineer Ibrahim Umar Ammar.
The petition also referred to a verified Facebook account belonging to Umar Ammar, which it said later reproduced the graphic together with substantially similar commentary.
Akpabio, however, expressly cautioned that the persons identified in the petition should not be presumed guilty merely because their accounts allegedly circulated the material.
His office said their alleged early and substantial roles in disseminating the graphic made them “material persons of interest” who could possess information capable of assisting investigators in tracing the origin of the publication.
According to the petition, such information could help identify the designer of the graphic, the original uploader, any possible sponsors or intermediaries and the broader distribution network through which the material circulated online.
Akpabio consequently asked the SSS to examine relevant publication records, devices and communications, as well as the provenance of the image, in accordance with the law.
The Senate President’s complaint is therefore not limited to denying authorship of the purported statement, but seeks a wider investigation into how the material was created, who first uploaded it and whether its circulation was coordinated.
