Senate President Godswill Akpabio has hinted that efforts are ongoing to secure favourable outcomes for serving senators affected by the recently concluded party primaries.

Akpabio spoke on Tuesday while welcoming lawmakers back from the three-week recess and Eid-el-Kabir break.

He congratulated political parties that had concluded their primaries and also felicitated with candidates who secured tickets for the next round of elections.

“I know that there will always be victories and disappointments,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President, however, suggested that the leadership of the Senate was working to minimise the number of lawmakers who would suffer political setbacks from the primaries.

“And in this Senate, we are promised that we will have very few disappointments. And I do know that the Senate Leader and the leadership of the Senate are working very hard towards that,” he added.

Akpabio did not provide details on the nature of the efforts being made by the Senate leadership.

His remarks come amid anxiety among senators who either lost party tickets or are involved in disputes arising from the primaries.

Fourteen serving senators were reportedly defeated during the All Progressives Congress primaries across different states.

Some lawmakers who lost out have already left the ruling party, including Shehu Buba, representing Bauchi South, and Garba Maidoki, representing Kebbi South.

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, had also alleged that some party leaders, including former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, assured him of an automatic ticket before he defected to the ruling party.

Akpabio jokingly cautioned senators against defecting to other political parties, while describing the outcome of the primaries as part of the democratic process.

He said although some aspirants won and others lost, democracy remained the ultimate winner.

Beyond politics, the Senate President expressed concern over the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, describing the incident as “an assault on our collective humanity.”

He warned politicians and aspirants against exploiting national tragedies for partisan advantage.

“At moments such as these, there is a temptation to divide, to accuse, and to seek advantage from tragedy. Politicians and aspirants must resist that temptation for such cheap publicity,” he said.

Akpabio urged lawmakers to support every lawful and necessary measure aimed at strengthening security, protecting schools and safeguarding communities.

“Let us continue to support every lawful and necessary measure to strengthen security, protect our schools, safeguard our communities, and ensure that every bandit faces the full weight of justice,” he added.
