The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Idowu Owohunwa, has expressed deep concern over a troubling pattern indicating the illicit manufacturing of AK-47 rifles and other firearms within the state. Owohunwa shared this disquiet during the inauguration of the state’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja, presided over by the acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

In his welcome address, Owohunwa highlighted a rising local proficiency in crafting a variety of firearms, including replicas of foreign-made pistols, AK47s, and other assault rifles. This unsettling trend, combined with the menace of cultism, presents a substantial threat to the state’s security landscape.

Beyond the menace of cultism, CP Owohunwa identified other security challenges plaguing the state, such as armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, and sexual and gender-based violence.

He remarked, “Our challenges also encompass navigating the complex interface between civil and criminal aspects of land disputes, which are prevalent in the state. Additionally, we grapple with traffic gridlocks that occasionally lead to traffic robberies, exacerbated by ongoing road construction projects, notably the Lagos-Ibadan highway.”

Owohunwa further stated, “Illegal firearms proliferation and illicit drug abuse and trafficking remain prominent issues. Our vigilant operatives routinely recover various weapons and illicit drugs through stop and search operations, raids on black spots, and other engagements. These recoveries are often linked to the commission of crimes across the state.”

He emphasized the disconcerting rise in local expertise related to the production of different types of firearms, including counterfeit foreign pistols, AK47s, and other assault rifles. This concerning development, coupled with the cultism threat, amplifies the jeopardy to Lagos State’s security. To counteract this menace, Owohunwa revealed plans for an upcoming conference to address cultism and violent crimes, with the goal of garnering support from various stakeholders to confront the evolving danger.

CP Owohunwa conveyed gratitude for the acting IGP’s visit, which allowed him to brief the IGP on the internal security situation in Lagos and areas where additional support was required.

He emphasized his focus on uniting all officers to refine operational strategies and provide disciplined, professionally-integrated leadership to sustain exceptional policing standards. Owohunwa noted a collaborative approach with other law enforcement agencies, fostering intelligence-led, citizens-driven, and operationally proactive policing.

Through these initiatives, public security has been reinforced, criminals’ ability to disrupt peace curtailed, and overall security stability improved across the state. Despite isolated security breaches, the CP lauded the resilience, synergy, diligence, courage, sacrifice, and motivation exhibited by his officers and men in their unwavering commitment to combat criminal elements and uphold justice.

In conclusion, Owohunwa asserted that they are resolutely building a fortified defense against criminal elements within Lagos, ensuring that justice prevails over time.
