*Says Cybersecurity in E-Filing Platforms Cannot Be Optional

The Lagos Judiciary on Monday commenced its 2025/2026 legal year with a high-level summit at the Shell Zenith Bank Hall, MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos, where Olumide Babalola, Founder of the Data Privacy Lawyers Association of Nigeria (DPLAN) and Chair of the NBA Data Protection Committee, delivered the keynote address on the theme: “Cybersecurity in AI-Driven Justice Systems: The Bar, The Bench and Other Ethical Concerns.”

In a 40-page presentation, Babalola examined the growing intersection of technology, law, and ethics, warning that without deliberate safeguards, Nigeria’s adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in justice delivery could expose courts to serious risks of manipulation, breaches, and erosion of public trust.

Babalola outlined practical measures to ensure integrity and transparency in Nigeria’s digital justice system, including:

  • Adoption of a judicial policy on responsible use of AI.
  • Continuous training for judges and lawyers on AI, privacy, and cybersecurity.
  • Clear privacy and data protection standards for e-filing and court processes.
  • Strong cybersecurity defenses, audits, and response protocols.
  • Full automation of e-filing platforms to limit human interference and insider abuse.

“These measures are not optional but essential if Nigeria is to harness AI’s benefits in the justice sector without compromising rights, fairness, or public confidence,” he said.

The summit drew distinguished figures from the judiciary, legislature, and executive, including:

  • Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Lagos State Attorney-General, Mr. Lawal Pedro, SAN
  • Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa
  • Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba
  • Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho (represented by Justice Allagoa)
  • Justice O. Faji, Administrative Judge of the Federal High Court
  • All judges of the Lagos State High Court, magistrates, and customary court judges

The session was chaired by Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, SAN, and moderated by Mr. Wale Akoni, SAN. Panel discussants included Justice Eniola Fabamwo, Dr. Babatunde Ajibade, SAN, Mrs. Sola Adegbonmire, and Dr. Oluwole Popoola. Eminent Senior Advocates, including Mr. Ebun Sofunde, SAN, were also in attendance.

In his opening remarks, Chief Judge Alogba acknowledged the inevitability of technological integration but stressed the need for vigilance against vulnerabilities and ethical risks. Speaker Obasa and other participants also underscored the importance of state-level legislation to complement federal regulatory frameworks on cybersecurity and data protection.

The summit not only marked the ceremonial opening of court activities for the new year but also served as a platform for strategic reflection on how Nigeria’s judiciary can adapt to the digital era.
