The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, on Tuesday inaugurated the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) Ministerial Committee, aimed at curbing corruption across both the public and private sectors.

Speaking at the inauguration, Fagbemi described corruption as a major obstacle to Nigeria’s national development goals, stressing that it has significantly eroded trust in institutions and hindered efficient service delivery.

“The fight against corruption is a core priority of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which is committed to strengthening anti-corruption agencies and ensuring accountability at all levels,” he stated.

He emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to tackling corruption, noting that the committee will play a crucial role in advancing the objectives of NACS while safeguarding democracy, improving governance, and driving sustainable economic growth.

Fagbemi highlighted that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s international obligations, including the ECOWAS Protocol on the Fight Against Corruption (2001), the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption (2003), and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

The minister outlined five core pillars of the NACS 2022–2026 framework, which will be implemented at both national and sub-national levels:

  1. Prevention of Corruption
  2. Public Engagement & Awareness
  3. Ethical Re-orientation & Behavioral Change
  4. Enforcement & Sanctions
  5. Recovery & Management of Proceeds of Crime

Fagbemi noted that the original NACS 2017–2021 action plan was developed and adopted by stakeholders on March 26, 2018. Following its expiration in November 2022, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approved a four-year extension, giving rise to the current NACS 2022–2026.

“To ensure successful implementation, the strategy adopts a top-down approach, where heads of relevant agencies drive the policy within their sectors while also facilitating cross-evaluation of implementation,” he added.

The newly inaugurated committee is chaired by Fagbemi and includes several key government officials:

  • Ministers of Finance, Interior, Foreign Affairs, Information, Women Affairs, and Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy
  • Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
  • Chairmen of the Senate and House Committees on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes
  • A representative from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), at the rank of Permanent Secretary or higher

The committee is expected to coordinate, monitor, and oversee the implementation of the anti-corruption strategy, ensuring that Nigeria meets its local and international commitments in the fight against corruption.
