Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda (Apapa I) has been elected as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. Her emergence comes after the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Meranda, who previously served as the Deputy Speaker, assumes leadership amid heightened scrutiny over allegations of corruption and financial impropriety against her predecessor.

Obasa’s removal follows a series of controversies and petitions. In December 2024, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was petitioned by the Progressive Youth Movement of Ikeja, Lagos State, to investigate Obasa for alleged financial misconduct, breach of public trust, and abuse of office.

The petition detailed accusations of embezzlement through proxy companies, violations of procurement laws, and unauthorized financial decisions. Among the allegations were claims of mismanaging N17 billion allocated for constructing a gate at the Lagos State House of Assembly and approving N200 million for a thanksgiving event allegedly inflated to an unreasonable amount.

The Progressive Youth Movement also accused Obasa of awarding contracts to companies linked to him, including a N469 million contract for constructing Ikeja Local Government Secretariat.

When confronted, Obasa dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, describing them as “nonsensical.” He maintained that the claims were baseless and exaggerated.
