The Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Abia State chapter, has appealed to the Abia State Government to provide official vehicles and well-secured parking facilities within court premises across the state.

The appeal followed the theft of a private car belonging to Chief Magistrate Ngozi Lakwa, which was reportedly stolen last week after she parked it beside the Umuahia High Court complex while attending to her official duties.

In a statement by the Chairman of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria, Abia State chapter, Orji Nnaemeka, the association expressed concern that a judicial officer performing her constitutional duty could suffer such personal loss due to inadequate security and lack of proper parking facilities around court buildings.

The association said the incident exposed the vulnerability of magistrates who are forced to rely on public or unsecured spaces to park their vehicles while carrying out official assignments.

According to Nnaemeka, the situation is unfair and discouraging to judicial officers who already serve the state under difficult conditions.

“It is unfair and demoralising for judicial workers to suffer personal loss while discharging their constitutional duties to the State and its citizens,” he said.

The association warned that more magistrates and judicial workers could become victims of similar incidents if urgent steps are not taken to address the problem.

It argued that the theft of the Chief Magistrate’s vehicle, as well as other risks and inconveniences faced by judicial officers, could have been avoided if adequate, monitored and secured parking spaces had been provided within court premises.

The group urged the Abia State Government to treat the request as a matter of urgency by providing official vehicles for magistrates and ensuring that court buildings are equipped with secure parking facilities to protect judicial officers while they perform their duties.
