The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) announced on October 13, 2023 that it has reached a negotiated settlement agreement with Unik Construction Engineering (Pty) Limited, ending sanctions proceedings for a corrupt practice against the company.

Under the settlement, Botswana-based Unik Construction Engineering will be under conditional non-debarment for 12 months starting October 11, 2023. During this period, Unik will remain eligible for AfDB-financed activities but will be required to strengthen its anti-bribery and integrity compliance program.

An investigation by the AfDB’s Office of Integrity and Anti-Corruption found that Unik Construction Engineering engaged in corrupt practices during the bidding process for two projects related to the Manzini Region Water Supply and Sanitation Project in Eswatini. A representative of Unik made a corrupt offer to an official involved in procurement for the projects, which cover construction of water infrastructure like pumping stations, treatment plants, reservoirs and distribution networks.

The Manzini Region Water Supply and Sanitation Project aims to provide sustainable potable water and sanitation services to improve well-being and spur economic growth in the Manzini region of Eswatini.

The settlement ends the sanctions case against Unik Construction Engineering. Under its agreement with the AfDB, the company will implement reforms and cooperate fully to enhance its integrity and anti-bribery compliance. This negotiated resolution demonstrates the AfDB’s commitment to good governance and accountability in development projects.
