The African Bar Association (AfBA), the leading continental association of lawyers in Africa, has called on political actors in the Republic of Togo to adhere to due process and the rule of law in their transition programme.

The association expressed deep concern over the recent developments in the West African nation, emphasizing the need for the government and all political actors to abide by the principles of constitutionalism and refrain from actions that could destabilize the country.

In a press statement released by Douglas Ogbankwa Esq., the Director of Strategic Communications of AfBA, the association’s president, Hannibal Uwaifo Esq., highlighted the recent case of the Republic of Senegal as an example of a successful transition of power. He noted that the immediate past government of President Macky Sall had followed the advice of AfBA, leading to the conduct of free, transparent, and credible elections, resulting in a peaceful transfer of power.

The African Bar Association expressed confidence that the government of Togo and those responsible for its governance and political stability would prioritize the interests of the Togolese people above all else. The association urged the government to adhere to existing constitutional arrangements and refrain from hastily contrived reforms that could lead to conflicts and instability, potentially reversing the democratic gains made by the country.

Furthermore, AfBA called on the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and well-meaning members of the international community to provide necessary support to the Republic of Togo. The aim is to ensure that the rule of law and timelines for democratic elections are complied with, safeguarding the stability of the sub-region.
