The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe, SAN, has urged African nations to redefine their approach to international relations by placing professionalism, integrity, and strategic foresight at the heart of global engagements.

Speaking at the ongoing 2025 African Bar Association (AFBA) Conference in Accra, Ghana, themed “Foreign Interest in Africa: Exploitation or Investment,” Osigwe emphasized that Africa’s progress and sovereignty depend largely on the quality of representation the continent sends to global decision-making tables.

In his goodwill message, the NBA President stated that African nations can avoid exploitation if they insist on being represented by competent and principled individuals.

“African countries will not be exploited if we do not allow it,” Osigwe said, urging governments to appoint professionals of integrity who prioritize national interest over personal gain in international negotiations, especially at the United Nations and other global forums.

He explained that the interdependence of modern economies has made cross-border transactions inevitable for African nations, stressing that “the nature of the agreements we enter into will determine whether we remain dependent or emerge as truly independent nations.”

Osigwe lamented that weak institutional structures, self-serving negotiations, and short-term political interests have historically left Africa disadvantaged in global partnerships. He called for a new era of transparent diplomacy anchored on strong legal frameworks and guided by experts who understand the long-term implications of international commitments.

He further urged participants to seize the opportunity of the conference to commit to ensuring that Africa’s abundant natural and human resources are harnessed for the continent’s elevation from the so-called “Third World” to “First World” status.

Reiterating that genuine investment must empower citizens, strengthen institutions, and promote sustainable development, the NBA President warned against partnerships that perpetuate dependency or external economic control.

Osigwe reaffirmed the NBA’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster equitable partnerships, ethical governance, and respect for the rule of law, noting that Africa’s transformation will begin only when Africans take full ownership of their destiny.
