The Vice-president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has called on manufacturers in the country to embrace technology in order to be competitive as the African Continental Free Trade Agreement kicks off on July 1, 2020.

He said this on Tuesday in Lagos at the 5th Nigeria Manufacturing and Equipment Expo organised by the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria in partnership with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council.

He said the manufacturing sector was at the centre of the current administration’s strategy for attaining sustainable growth and the President’s promise of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty over the next 10 years.

He said the nation stood on the brink of the fourth industrial revolution, a technological revolution that would fundamentally alter the way people live, work and relate with one another.

Osinbajo, who was represented by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, said it was the manufacturing sector that had a strong link to create jobs, improve value addition and create wealth.

He said, “The manufacturing sector is at the centre of our strategy for attaining sustainable growth and fulfilling President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise to lift 100 million people out of poverty over the next 10 years.

“No other sector provides a stronger linkage to creating new jobs, improving value addition and creating wealth for 50 per cent of our workforce residing in the agricultural sector.

“The manufacturing sector must prepare itself for the fourth industrial revolution coming in the age of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.”

He said the nation was at a crucial point in its economic history, having emerged from a recession, and attained a reasonable measure of macroeconomic stability with positive growth for more than two years.

The President of MAN, Mansur Ahmed, said the equipment expo served as an annual market place for stakeholders to examine the state of the manufacturing sector and deliberate on the road map for the development.
