The management of Ado Bayero Mall in the ancient city of Kano has expressed its regrets that Shoprite would be winding up its operations in the city from January next year even as the Mall says discussions are on-going with other retail outlets to take over the section being vacated by Shoprite.

In a statement signed by a director of the Mall, Ike Okeke, he said the it was unfortunate that Shoprite hinged it’s decision on the dire economic situation in the country.

“We note with regret, the decision of the management of Shoprite to end its operations in Kano effective January 2024 stating the current challenging economic situation in the country as its reason. Over the ten years that the company operated out of the premium Ado Bayero Mall in Kano, we have enjoyed a cordial and mutually beneficial relationship and always extended to them the famed social and business-building support all tenants in the mall enjoy.”

Okeke emphasised that it mist be noted that the mall does not get involved in the business operations or investment decisions of its tenants, these being entirely their responsibility and prerogative. He added that as with practices all over the world, Mall tenants come and go, depending on objectives and goals determined by the owners of the enterprise.

Speaking further, he said “while we wish Shoprite the best in their future endeavors, we wish to assure the shoppers and customers of the mall as well as the good people of Kano, that new major retail chains are in discussions with us to take spaces within the mall and these will be announced in the not distant future.

Our commitment to providing the best global quality shopping experience to the people of Kano remain unshaken.”
