*Pledges To Continue Tradition And Make It Better If Elected

The Concept of ‘Elders Night’ at the NBA Lagos Branch was first conceived and actualised by our administration, when I was Branch Secretary in 2015. I am glad to see that it has not only become a fine tradition of the Lagos Branch but also copied and adopted by many other branches nationwide.

The idea was the product of very engaging discussions with late Pa. Olatunji Fortunatus Gomez, when I and the then Chairman of the Branch Alex Nduka Muoka visited him at his home in Lagos. It was deliberately designed to specially and specifically celebrate our elders for their invaluable contributions to the Branch in varied elected and/or appointed positions.

The first Elders Night held during the Law Week of the Branch in the same year was hosted by Mr. Ademola Edu (deceased) courtesy of Mrs. Tolani Edu-Adeola at his palatial Bourdillon Road, Ikoyi, Lagos home and the event was well attended by Elders of the Branch.

Some of our Elders and Leaders who were present at the event are former Chairmen of the Branch; Godwin Olatunde Odunlami 1986–1987 (centenary Chairman); late Sir Emmanuel U.N. Ofulue (RIP) 1997–1999; Hon. Justice Adesuyi Olateru Olagbegi 1999–2001; Chief N. Abiodun Dabiri 2001–2003 (late); Mr. Foluso Fayokun 2005–2007; Hon. Justice Taiwo O. Taiwo 2011–2013. I recall that my mentor and boss, T.B Akinyeye who was also a former Secretary of the Branch and many others were at the event.

Today as we get ready to fete our Elders again, it is my solemn pledge that the tradition will not only continue but we will make it bigger and better. Our Elders deserve all the adulations and commendations they get because they found the path for us to follow. Their immense contributions and the sacrifices they made to and for the Branch shall not be forgotten.

Thank you as we prepare to meet later today, for an evening of conviviality and camaraderie with our Elders and Leaders.

Adebola Olarotimi Lema, a Candidate for Chairman in the coming elections was Secretary of the Branch from 2014 to 2015
