The former Secretary to the Council of Legal Education, Yusuf Shehu Usman, has urged the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN to advise President Buhari not to assent to the Senate Bill which approves the increase of campuses of the Nigerian Law School.

The Senate had on Tuesday passed a Bill that seeks to increase the number Law School campuses from seven to 14.

The existing Law School campuses are located in Lagos (Southwest); Abuja (North Central); Yola, Adamawa State (Northeast); Kano (Northwest); Enugu (Southeast) and Yenegoa, Bayelsa State (South-South).

The additional campuses approved by the Senate are Kabba Law School Campus, Kogi State (Northcentral); Maiduguri Law School Campus, Borno State (Northeast); and Argungu Law School Campus, Kebbi State (Northwest).

However, in a Facebook post on February 9 monitored by TheNigeriaLawyer, Usman said the Senate is insensitive to the present situation of the existing campuses of the Nigerian Law School

“In considering the Bill passed by the Senate creating six additional Law Schools across the country,

“There is an obvious disconnect between Political sentiments and the reality of true Professional training of lawyers

“It’s obvious that the Senate did not consider the present situation in the existing Campuses of the Law School in terms of funding and academic staff and resources

“How will the new campuses be funded and from where will they recruit competent and adequate academic staff to deliver the quality of vocational/ Professional training of lawyers required in modern times?

“It’s the same Senate that insisted that the Law School must send everything it generates from the tuition fees into the Federation Account and come to budget for allocation of the funds needed to run the School on a day to day basis”

Usman, who also happens to be the former Attorney-General of Nasarawa State under Governor Tanko Almakura, said the operation of the Nigerian Law School has been put in jeopardy and the quality of legal education will be impacted negatively.

He therefore urged the Attorney-General of the Federation, Malami SAN, to advise President Buhari not give assent to the bill

“As a result, academic and other support operations of the Law School have been put in jeopardy and the system can not operate efficiently

“This no doubt has impacted heavily e negatively in the quality of education in the Law School as currently operated and we are all witnesses to the results in the field of practice

“I ask: Is this the same kind of Law School campuses that the Senate envisaged by the Bill it passed to create more confusion and lower the quality and standard of training Lawyers in Nigeria?

“I hope that the Honourable Attorney General will rightly advice Mr President not to give his Assent to this retrogressive Bill.” Usman said
