The Acting Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Honourable Justice Nathan Musa, said the state judiciary entertained a total of One hundred thousand court cases comprising of civil, criminal, and appeals during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Justice Nathan lamented the challenges that confronted the judiciary during the outgoing legal year due to the Covid-19 pandemic but noted that the judiciary nonetheless performed its duties within the reality of the new norm.

Speaking at an elaborate occasion to mark the commencement of 2021/2022 new legal year, on Monday, Justice Nathan said a total of 100,000 cases comprising of civil, criminal, civil/criminal, and appeals were registered by the Area Courts, Upper Area Courts, Magistrate Courts, and High Courts.

He said, “Out of these 100,000 indexed cases, Seventy thousand (70,000) cases were disposed by the various courts.”

He also added that during the same period last year the judiciary in the state generated and paid into the coffers of the state government a total of N6 million as its Internally Generated Revenue.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who was represented at the event by his deputy, Crowther Seth, said his administration remained committed to the autonomy of the judiciary.

Fintiri said his administration which is in full support of the autonomy of the judiciary added that the executive branch under him will continue to work with the judiciary to strengthen democracy.

Earlier in his remarks, Justice Nathan promised to decongest the correctional centres by examining courts dockets to release inmates who are not supposed to be incarcerated.

He also pledged to stamp out corruption, adding that a committee would be set to investigate and checkmate corrupt practices in the judiciary.

In his goodwill message, the chairman Nigerian Bar Association Yola branch, Barrister Jibril Jimeta, thanked the governor for approving and allocating land and existing structure for NBA in the state which ended the accommodation challenges faced by the association.
