The Acting Vice Chancellor of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo State, Prof. Samuel Akintunde, has disclosed that the institution spends no less than ₦26 million monthly on electricity alone, excluding additional costs on diesel for power generation.

Akintunde made the revelation during a press briefing in Ondo ahead of the university’s 61st Foundation Day and 35th Convocation Ceremony.
“We pay about ₦26 million monthly for electricity. That’s aside from what we spend on diesel. The university consumes 5,000 litres of diesel every two weeks. Clearly, we are facing significant funding challenges,” he said.
The acting VC noted that these expenditures come despite the university grappling with low student enrolment and other financial pressures. He added that the institution is now considering alternative energy sources to reduce power costs.
Despite the challenges, Akintunde reaffirmed the university’s status as a leading institution in teacher education, research, and community development.
On the upcoming convocation, the VC announced that the university will be graduating six academic sets—from the 2017/2018 session to date. The convocation lecture titled “The Advent of Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Nigeria’s Tertiary Education” will be delivered by Prof. Toyin Falola, an eminent Professor of African Studies at the University of Texas, Austin, USA.
Among the dignitaries to receive honorary doctorate degrees at the event are Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu—an alumna of the university—and Oba (Dr.) Victor Kiladejo, the Osemawe and paramount ruler of Ondo Kingdom.
Akintunde also revealed that 995 students of the university have applied for the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), introduced by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The total sum expected from the loan initiative is ₦68,316,200, with each student also entitled to a ₦20,000 monthly stipend.
