Senior Advocate of Nigeria and former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, Yemi Akangbe, SAN, has procured free access to the Nigerian Weekly Law Reports (NWLR) online platform for 25,000 young lawyers across Nigeria.

The initiative, implemented through a partnership with Nigerian Law Publications Ltd, publishers of the NWLR, targets lawyers within zero to seven years post-call. Akangbe is personally funding the entire subscription cost for beneficiaries, a major financial commitment considering that individual annual access to the platform costs N50,000 per user.

The intervention is designed to eliminate financial barriers that prevent young legal practitioners from accessing reliable legal research tools, particularly at the formative stage of their careers. With thousands of lawyers called to the Bar every year, many young practitioners struggle to afford subscriptions to comprehensive law reporting platforms despite their importance to effective legal practice.

The NWLR online platform is widely regarded as Nigeria’s leading law reporting service, providing access to decades of authoritative judgments and precedents from the country’s superior courts. These resources form the backbone of legal research, judicial reasoning, and professional advocacy.

Akangbe’s intervention reflects the enduring philosophy of the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN, who believed that access to legal knowledge should not be limited by economic constraints. Beyond his human rights advocacy, Fawehinmi was a strong proponent of widening access to legal resources to strengthen the Bar and improve the quality of legal practice in Nigeria.

By extending this philosophy into the digital era, Akangbe has underscored the continued relevance of democratizing legal knowledge. His decision to personally underwrite the cost of the subscriptions demonstrates a strong commitment to capacity building and the long-term development of the legal profession.

Through this initiative, young lawyers will be able to conduct thorough legal research, study judicial precedents, track the evolution of legal principles, and provide better-informed legal services to clients from the early stages of their careers.

Details on registration and access will be announced through official channels in due course. The registration process is expected to be simple and inclusive, ensuring that all eligible lawyers within the stipulated post-call bracket can benefit.

The initiative represents a deliberate investment in strengthening professional competence and improving standards at the Bar. As Nigeria’s legal profession continues to expand, such interventions are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring that growth is matched by quality and expertise.

Akangbe’s action sets a strong example of leadership within the legal community, highlighting the impact that targeted, practical support from senior members of the profession can have on the next generation of lawyers.
