The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man, Agwu Ukpo, who was captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a woman over a dispute relating to a pot of soup.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa.

According to the statement, the suspect, who is from Akanu Ohafia in Abia State, was arrested by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Command following actionable intelligence.

“Leveraging on actionable intelligence, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, Abia Command, have apprehended the above-mentioned suspect, who was captured in a viral video assaulting one Amarachi Chiyere over a dispute relating to a pot of soup,” the statement said.

The Command said the case is currently under discreet investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, adding that the suspect will be charged to court for assault and attempted murder upon conclusion of investigations.

The police strongly condemned the incident, describing the act as barbaric, inhumane and unacceptable under any circumstance.

The Command urged members of the public to desist from all forms of violence and allow lawful authorities to resolve disputes.

It further assured residents that it remains committed to ensuring that justice is served and that perpetrators of crime are made to face the full weight of the law.
