The Nigerian Medical Association, Abia State chapter, has suspended its planned indefinite strike following the release of renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Bonaventure Aguocha, from captivity.

Aguocha was abducted on May 24 while returning to Umuahia, Abia State, from neighbouring Imo State.

The NMA had earlier planned to commence a total and indefinite strike on June 2 over his abduction and the growing insecurity affecting medical practitioners.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday in Umuahia, the association confirmed that the surgeon regained his freedom on June 1 after spending nine days in captivity.

The statement was signed by the Chairman of the Abia NMA, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye.

“We thank God for preserving his life and for his safe return to his family, colleagues, and patients,” the association said.

The NMA expressed appreciation to Abia State Governor, Alex Otti; Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; the Department of State Services; the Nigeria Police Force; and others involved in securing Aguocha’s release.

It also acknowledged the prayers, solidarity and sustained advocacy of members of the public during the ordeal.

While expressing relief over Aguocha’s release, the association condemned the recurring abduction of healthcare workers, warning that such incidents must not be normalised.

The NMA said the repeated targeting of doctors and other health professionals undermines healthcare delivery and weakens the morale of medical workers already operating under difficult conditions.

“The recurring targeting of doctors can be seen in the still unresolved case of Prof. Iweha since 2020,” the statement read.

“This severely undermines healthcare delivery and the morale of professionals working under already difficult conditions.

“We call on the federal and state governments to urgently strengthen security around healthcare workers and facilities.”

The association also demanded a thorough investigation into Aguocha’s abduction and the prosecution of those responsible, saying such action would serve as a deterrent to others.

According to the NMA, Aguocha’s safe release, in line with the earlier directive of its congress, made it necessary to immediately suspend the planned total and indefinite strike.

“Aguocha’s safe release, in line with congress’ earlier directive, has necessitated the immediate suspension of the total and indefinite strike,” the association said.

The NMA reaffirmed its commitment to serving the people of Abia State and continuing engagement with government and security agencies to guarantee a safe working environment for doctors and other healthcare professionals.

It also wished Aguocha speedy recovery from the physical and psychological trauma of the incident.
