Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Okey Wali, SAN, has been released from the captivity of kidnappers, according to reliable sources.

The former NBA President was reportedly in good spirits, and it is believed that he is receiving medical attention in an undisclosed location.

A reliable and undisclosed source from the NBA Port Harcourt branch revealed this to TheNigeriaLawyer.  It was added that that the former NBA President is well and is in good spirits.

Sources say that Mr. Wali made contact with his family at around 1 pm on today. He was allegedly still in the custody of his kidnappers as of last night.

At press time the condition for release of the former NBA was not clear, whether it was ransom free.

When contacted, police in the state said they were not aware of the release as such development has not been reported to any police station.

Mr. Wali, who was the 26th President of the NBA, was kidnapped at gunpoint on April 17, 2023, along the Obiri Ikwerre flyover on East-West Road, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Port Harcourt. The kidnappers shot and killed one of his aides, while two policemen attached to Mr. Wali were seriously injured in the incident.

The current NBA President, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, had recently visited Mr. Wali’s family in Port Harcourt. The NBA President expressed his concern over the unfortunate incident and prayed for God’s intervention on behalf of the family.

During his visit, a prayer session was held for Mr. Wali’s safe release, and the NBA President urged the family to keep faith in God. The President and his delegation also paid a courtesy call on the Commissioner of Police Rivers State and the Chairman Body of Benchers, Hon. Justice Mary Odili (JSC Rtd), to discuss the promotion of the rule of law and the justice sector.
