Sadiq Abacha, son of Nigeria’s former military ruler, the late General Sani Abacha, has strongly defended his father’s legacy following fresh controversies surrounding his role in Nigeria’s political history.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Sadiq expressed confidence that history would judge his father favorably, despite widespread criticism. His comments come in response to the release of former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, A Journey in Service, which reignited debates about the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

In his memoir, Babangida admitted that the annulled election was “credible, free, and fair” and was won by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). However, he claimed that the decision to nullify the election was influenced by forces within his administration, allegedly led by Abacha, without his full awareness.

The former head of state also accused Abacha of plotting to violently overthrow his government before eventually seizing power later in 1993.

Reacting to these claims, Sadiq Abacha dismissed attempts to tarnish his father’s image, suggesting that Abacha was a victim of envy and betrayal.

“The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit. History shall remember you for being a better leader, no matter how much they try to put you down,” he wrote.

He further stated that many of his father’s critics secretly wished they were like him.

“As a son, I am most proud of you today. You indeed are the man they wish they were half of.”

Sadiq concluded his post with a Hausa proverb, “Duk wanda yayi jifa a kasuwa,” which translates to, “Whoever throws a stone in the market…”—implying that every action has consequences.

Sani Abacha ruled Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998, a period marked by both economic policies that stabilized the naira and allegations of corruption and human rights abuses.
