The Ondo State Police Command on Monday said it would arraign a soldier who was allegedly involved in the rape of a student of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko.

The suspect, Lance Corporal Sunday Adelola, allegedly raped the victim, a 300-level student of the Department of Religous and African Studies of the AAUA, at a military checkpoint along Ikare Akoko-Akungba Akoko road, two weeks ago.

Following the alleged rape, it was gathered that Lance CorporalAdelola had been dismissed by the authorities of the Nigeria Army before he was handed over to the police for onward prosecution.

Speaking with our correspondent, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Femi Joseph said the suspect would certainly be charged to court this week.

He said, “We are taking the suspect to court on Wednesday and if we don’t take him to court on Wednesday, we will certainly take him to court on Thursday. ”

On the allegation that the army and police wanted to sweep the case under the carpet, Joseph denied the allegation, saying justice must take its due course on the matter.

Meanwhile, a group under the auspices of the Women for Advancement Group, Ondo State chapter, has commended the army for dismissing the soldier.

The state Coordinator of the group, Mrs. Kemi Kamar, in a statement, urged the police to ensure that the suspect was brought to book.

She said, “Now that the case is with the police, we want to appeal to the police to do a proper investigation and charged the case to court without any delay. This will serve as a deterrent to others who think they are above the law.”
