A coalition of youths under the banner of Northern Youth for Peace and Progress (NYPP) has demanded the immediate removal of Senator Shehu Umar Buba as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence, citing a leaked video allegedly linking him to activities that could benefit armed bandit groups.

Speaking at a press briefing in Kaduna on Sunday, the group’s coordinator, Comrade Hassan Sadau, described the situation as “a matter of national urgency and public trust,” urging Senate President Godswill Akpabio to act swiftly.

At the center of the controversy is a purported video that allegedly shows large sums of cash being loaded into vehicles within Senator Buba’s residence, alongside dozens of motorcycles similar to those often used in rural bandit attacks. The footage also allegedly features a controversial cleric said to have ties with known bandit groups.

While the authenticity of the video has yet to be officially verified, the NYPP insisted that such serious claims require an immediate, transparent investigation. The group urged the Senate to strip Senator Buba of his chairmanship role pending the outcome of a probe, while also calling on the Senate Committee on Ethics to launch a full inquiry.

“Leaving Senator Buba in that position while these claims hang over him weakens the credibility of the committee and erodes public confidence in the Senate’s commitment to securing the nation,” Sadau said.

He stressed that communities in Zamfara State, one of the areas most devastated by banditry, continue to suffer displacement, trauma, and daily loss of lives. According to him, even the perception that a legislator in charge of national security oversight may be linked to such activities is grave enough to demand urgent action.
