Vice President Kashim Shettima on Monday handed over the reins of his office to 14-year-old Joy Ogah, a passionate advocate for girl-child education, for a day at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The move, part of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to promoting education and gender equality, saw Ogah assume the role of Vice President and deliver a compelling address to the nation, calling for inclusive education, protection of girls’ rights, and improved school amenities, including sanitation and nutrition.
“When girls are protected, peace becomes possible,” Ogah said. “I may be the Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day. They must continue in our policies, our classrooms, our conversations, and our budgets.”
The handover occurred during a courtesy visit by PLAN International, led by Helen Idiong, Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation. Vice President Shettima praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as a symbol of what an empowered girl-child can achieve, and reaffirmed the federal government’s support for initiatives that uplift young girls.
“In President Bola Tinubu, you have an ally you can believe in and invest your trust in,” Shettima told the delegation, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
Ogah highlighted the pressing need to address Nigeria’s education gap, noting that 10.5 million children remain out of school, over 60 percent of them girls. She urged the government, development partners, and citizens to ensure safe, inclusive education and access to essential facilities and services.
The initiative was widely hailed as a powerful act of mentorship and advocacy, demonstrating how young voices can influence national policy and shine a light on the challenges facing Nigeria’s girl-child population.
