On Friday, President Bola Tinubu administered the oath of office to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, making her the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) in an acting capacity.

The swearing-in ceremony took place just 24 hours after the former CJN stepped down upon reaching the statutory retirement age.

In her remarks following the oath, Justice Kekere-Ekun assured Nigerians that she will work to improve public confidence in the judiciary. “My expectation is that we will take the judiciary to higher heights,” she stated. “The reputation that it has will improve. We will make sure that people have more confidence in the judiciary.”

The new acting CJN emphasized that improving the judiciary is a collaborative effort. “It’s not a one-man job. We all have to be on board because we all see where the areas are that need improvement,” she said. “I believe that the profession, because we all want to see a better judiciary, a better judiciary is for the benefit of the entire nation.”

Justice Kekere-Ekun also addressed concerns about the appointment process and discipline within the judiciary. “Whatever the shortcomings that we see today, we are all members of the society. So if we want to see improvement, let us start with each and every one of us and our approach to justice. Let us all also have faith in the system.”

She expressed confidence that by the end of her tenure, Nigeria will have a judiciary that all citizens can be proud of. “I believe that by the grace of God, at the end of my tenure, we will have a judiciary we can all be proud of,” she concluded.

Notable attendees at the swearing-in ceremony included the Senate President, representing the National Assembly. Justice Kekere-Ekun becomes the second female Chief Justice of Nigeria. Her extensive career has seen her serve in various capacities, starting as a lawyer and rising through the ranks of the magistrate courts, high court, Court of Appeal, and now the Supreme Court.
