The President of Nigerian Bar Association Mr. Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud SAN has called on persons using Nigerian Bar Association social media handles without the approval of the Association to desist from that and to shut down the platforms. He has also cautioned on the use of social media to cause disparage on colleagues and our noble profession. The president made this statement at the ongoing NBA NEC meeting in Ilorin, the capital city of Kwara State. In his statement: “It has come to the notice of the NBA that many people including some lawyers, run platforms or handles in the name of the Association without the authority of the NBA. He said, this is unacceptable and perpetrator of such must desist from the act and shut those sites and also remove the name NBA as site I.D. “This problem is not limited to Nigeria as the Law Society of England and Wales are also combating similar problems and has constituted a committee to come up with recommendations.” “I want to caution that we must discourage the use of social media to disparage our colleagues or our profession. “Many colleagues take to social media to make reckless accusations and allegations or disparaging comments against their colleagues or leaders of the profession,” he stated Speaking further, Mahmoud, SAN pointed out that “Just a couple of days ago a young lawyer went to the media to accuse me and the NBA of theft of his art work and presenting it to President Muhammadu Buhari without his knowledge or consent.” “The allegation was very irresponsible and exposed the association to ridicule. It is unacceptable,” he added He also pointed out that appropriate disciplinary measures will be taking on culprit, and add further stated that anything that will undermine the integrity of the profession must be done away with.]]>
