According to a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Isiaka Sola Gold, on Saturday, the curfew will take immediate effect. Gold stated that all human and vehicular traffic in the affected communities was barred during the curfew, which he said was designed to assist security agencies in containing and preventing the escalation of the conflict and restoring peace to the warring communities. The SSG further said the government also ordered the suspension of all activities related to the yam festival in Oke Ero LGA of the state. He urged residents of both communities to comply with the law, adding that they should remain calm and continue to conduct their lawful affairs in peace as security agencies secured lives and property in both communities. Gold restated the commitment of the Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed administration to uphold the security of all residents in the state and unravel the perpetrators of the conflict in Iloffa and Odo-Owa, respectively starting with a Judicial Commission of Enquiry. The imposition of the curfew followed an assessment tour of the two warring communities by Gold, alongside some other top government functionaries, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Lawan Ado, and top officers of the Kwara State Police Command. Our correspondent observed that no fewer than 20 buildings were either burnt or vandalised, including a church building, while three cars were razed. Some affected residents were also seen leaving the communities, especially Ilofa, as they expressed fears over another round of attacks. They stated that after Thursday’s attacks, more mayhem followed on Friday. Ado, in an interview with journalists, confirmed that two people lost their lives during the crisis. The police commissioner also paraded a suspect, Ibrahim Ganiyu, who he said was apprehended by the Ekiti State Police Command on Friday, following the crisis. He said, “We went there (Ekiti) and brought him. We will interrogate him and get other members that participated in this horrendous activity. In fact, we have gotten some names through intelligence. We are pursuing them and we will get them. “They arrested Ganiyu as he was running away. He was trying to escape when the police apprehended and later interrogated him. They found out that he was one of those people who participated in the mayhem between the two villages.” Ado noted that normalcy had been restored and that there was a joint patrol of security operatives in the troubled communities, while assuring all residents to go about their business lawfully. “I want to inform all of them in the two communities that they should desist from any form of festival until this issue is resolved or else anybody who flouts this order will be held accountable and we will deal with him accordingly,” he added.
