The association expressed concern that either due to lack of information or lack of business orientation, some lawyers still engage in sharp practices in spite of many legitimate opportunities existing in the profession. It said it is for this reason, therefore, that it had chosen, “Building and sustaining a vibrant law practice — Prospects and challenges,” as the theme of the 2017 edition of its Annual Law Week coming up between May 24 and 27. The Chairman of the NBA, Lagos branch Law Week Committee, Mr. Ahmed Akanbi, disclosed this on Tuesday, while briefing journalists on the upcoming programme scheduled to hold at the City Hall, Lagos Island. Akanbi said the Managing Partner of Aluko & Oyebode law firm, Mr. Gbenga Oyebode, who is a former Chairman of Access Bank Plc, had been chosen to deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony which will have the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, as the special guest of honour. “How can we cope with the issue of recession? One has come to discover that a lot of our colleagues are really complaining about so many things. Some of us tend to concentrate only on the technical side of things. As a result of paucity of income, we found that some of our colleagues engage in sharp practices, which should not be. It is only when a lawyer has become financially independent that he can be of any benefit or use to the society. As always we need to be able to guide ourselves on the existing opportunities in the profession. “Aluko & Oyebode is one of the biggest law firms in the country. It has about 70 lawyers. We want him (Oyebode) to come and tell us how he has been able to do it,” Akanbi explained. He, however, said beyond the business side of things, the Law Week programme had also been “carefully designed to be a one-stop response to such burning issues and challenges that continue to beset the minds of lawyers and the general public.” He added that an array of experts in different fields has been selected to provide expert knowledge on contemporary areas of discourse. The programme, Akanbi said, would be rounded off with the “Red Carpet/Black Tie Dinner” in honour of the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Olufunmilayo Atilade, who will be retiring later this year.
