The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, over the alleged murder of his 27-year-old girlfriend, Ugwu Chinyere Rosemary, following the conclusion of police investigations into her death.

Emmanuel was arraigned on Friday, October 16, 2026, and subsequently remanded in correctional custody by the court.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 17, the Police Command said the court also directed that the case file be forwarded to the Enugu State Attorney-General through the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for review and legal advice.

“The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, male, aged 30, for the alleged murder of his 27-year-old girlfriend, Ugwu Chinyere Rosemary, in September 2026. He was arraigned on 16th October 2026, following the conclusion of investigations, and remanded in correctional custody by the court,” the police said.

According to the Command, Emmanuel was arrested on September 21 after police officers rescued him from an angry mob following the incident.

Police investigations alleged that Rosemary was killed on September 19 inside Emmanuel’s apartment.

The police alleged that during the incident, the suspect struck the victim on the head with a pestle before inflicting deep cuts on her head and neck with a machete and severing her right wrist.

Investigators further alleged that the incident followed an argument between the couple over who had infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

The police said the severed wrist and other exhibits connected with the investigation were recovered from the apartment.

Following the completion of the investigation, the suspect was brought before the court, which ordered his remand pending further legal steps in the case.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating violent crime and ensuring that persons accused of criminal offences are investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police did not disclose further details of the charge or the court before which Emmanuel was arraigned.
