Two police officers have been killed and three inspectors injured after gunmen attacked the Uratta Police Division in Aba, Abia State, with explosives, setting part of the station and a patrol vehicle ablaze.

The Abia State Police Command confirmed the attack, saying the assailants stormed the division and used explosives during the assault, resulting in a fire that damaged part of the police facility and the divisional patrol van.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said two officers lost their lives in the attack, while three inspectors sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

The Command, however, clarified that the attackers did not cart away any firearms or ammunition from the police station.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Wilfred Afolabi, personally led an operational team to the area, where security personnel combed the surrounding environment and restored calm.

According to the police, intensified security operations and surveillance have since been launched in and around the area as part of efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

The Command assured residents that it would deploy the necessary operational and intelligence resources to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“The Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers and the entire Police family over this painful loss,” the statement said.

Residents were also urged to remain calm and vigilant and to provide credible information that could assist the ongoing investigation.

The Command said useful information could be reported at the nearest police station, through suggestion boxes and contact details provided at police divisions, or through its emergency hotlines.

Meanwhile, Abia State Governor Alex Otti was reported to have visited the attacked police station following the incident.

The governor also visited the injured police officers at the hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
