Former Jigawa State Governor and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sule Lamido, has urged Nigerians to carefully compare the records of previous PDP administrations with the performance of the current All Progressives Congress-led government before deciding how to vote in the 2027 general elections.

Lamido spoke at the inauguration of the PDP Campaign Council at the party’s state headquarters in Dutse, Jigawa State, where he warned voters against what he described as repeating the mistake of supporting the APC in previous elections.

“I believe Nigerians have learnt from their mistakes. Therefore, they must critically examine the achievements of previous administrations under the PDP and compare them with those of the current administration before deciding who should lead them,” he said.

The former governor accused the APC-led administration of failing to meet the expectations of Nigerians, arguing that both Jigawa State and the country required experienced and competent leadership capable of addressing challenges in critical sectors.

Focusing on conditions in Jigawa, Lamido alleged that access to quality healthcare had deteriorated, with hospitals lacking adequate medical services and essential drugs, while the education sector was also facing serious difficulties.

“Today, Jigawa is facing serious challenges in accessing quality healthcare. Hospitals lack adequate medical services and essential drugs, while the education sector continues to deteriorate,” he said.

Lamido maintained that the PDP was determined to restore what he described as good governance, development, unity and peaceful coexistence if returned to power.

He also used the occasion to defend the PDP’s place in Nigeria’s political history, describing it as an enduring political platform despite the emergence and disappearance of several parties since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

“Since 1999, almost all political parties have collapsed, leaving the PDP as the only surviving party to date,” he said.

“It has seen yesterday, today and, by the grace of God, it will see tomorrow.”

Lamido further argued that several prominent politicians who later moved into other political parties began their political careers or rose to prominence under the PDP, presenting this as evidence of the party’s influence on Nigeria’s democratic development.

The former governor assured party supporters that the PDP would vigorously campaign for its candidates at all levels in the 2027 elections, including the presidency, Senate, House of Representatives and state Houses of Assembly.

He said the party intended to run a peaceful campaign and would avoid insults, intimidation and personal attacks against political opponents.

According to him, the PDP’s campaign would instead focus on governance, public welfare and rebuilding citizens’ confidence in political leadership.

Lamido’s remarks come as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections, with campaign structures already being put in place across the states.

In Jigawa, the PDP governorship campaign structure is being led by its governorship candidate, Mustapha Sule Lamido, with former Inspector-General of Police Suleiman Abba among those named in the wider campaign organisation.

The former governor’s warning effectively places the records of the PDP and APC at the centre of his argument to voters, urging Nigerians to assess their experiences under both parties rather than base their choices solely on campaign promises.

His criticisms of the APC remain partisan claims made in the course of the PDP campaign. The reports reviewed did not contain a response from the APC to his latest remarks.
