Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, was on Friday sworn in for a second four-year term, becoming the first governor in the state’s history to secure and begin a consecutive second term in office.

Oyebanji was inaugurated alongside his deputy, Chief Monisade Afuye, at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, following their victory in the June 20, 2026 governorship election.

The oaths of office and allegiance were administered by the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Adekanye Lekan Ogunmoye. The Ekiti State Government and the National Judicial Council identify Ogunmoye as the substantive Chief Judge of the state.

Afuye took her oaths at about 1:28 p.m. before signing the relevant documents, while Oyebanji took his at about 1:40 p.m. and subsequently signed the documents formally commencing another four-year tenure.

The inauguration marks a notable point in Ekiti’s political history. Since the state was created in 1996, previous governors had not succeeded in winning and immediately commencing a second consecutive elected term. Oyebanji’s re-election therefore broke what had often been described as the state’s succession jinx.

The ceremony attracted political leaders, serving and former governors, traditional rulers and party leaders from across the country.

President Bola Tinubu was represented at the event by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, who arrived in Ado-Ekiti ahead of the inauguration. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin were also among the senior federal officials present.

Also present were former Ekiti State governors Kayode Fayemi, Segun Oni and Ayodele Fayose, as well as Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

Governors and other political leaders also attended the ceremony, including Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum; Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who chairs the Nigeria Governors’ Forum; Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other state officials.

Other dignitaries included Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake, former APC National Chairman Bisi Akande and senior members of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Oyebanji’s inauguration begins another four-year tenure for the governor and his deputy, with the administration expected to build on programmes undertaken during its first term.

At the ceremony, Oyebanji pledged to consolidate on his administration’s previous work and pursue policies aimed at improving the living conditions of residents of the state.
