Arise News has declined to withdraw its report on the display of the preliminary register of voters in Lagos State, after the Lagos State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission issued a press statement denying it.

The station told viewers that the Commission’s statement said the display of the registered voters was conducted across all 245 registration areas in Lagos State, including Alimosho and Shomolu.

“Now we take note of INEC’s response, and we respect the Commission’s right to provide its own account. However, Arise News stands by its report, as our findings were based on independent on-ground verification, not social media posts or unverified claims.”

The broadcaster set out three findings.

On the portal.

“At the time of our confirmation on Tuesday, the INEC portal displayed a message stating there are currently no preliminary registers to display.”

On Alimosho.

“In the Alimosho area, our investigation revealed the register was strictly available on request between nine AM and three PM, and residents were only allowed to check for their own names, which falls short of the open public display required under Section nineteen of the Electoral Act.”

And a concession.

“Arise News acknowledges that INEC may have since rectified the situation, and we welcome that. But the issues we reported were real and the public deserves to know.”

It closed with the demand that gives the story its shape.

“We remain committed to responsible, accurate and independent journalism, and we call on INEC to ensure that every Nigerian in every ward has full and open access to the voters register as required by law, not access by request, but access by right.”

The second item in the broadcast is a reporter’s piece to camera from what she describes as a designated assembly point for Commission officials.

“So I’m currently at St. George’s Primary School on Awolowo Road, and I’m told that this is where the INEC officers usually assemble for collection and everything INEC related. But then today, the last day in the display window for Nigerians to check the preliminary voters register, and they are not on scene.”

“The security guard already told me that he wasn’t sure they were going to be around today. And yes, the canopy is empty. As at the time of recording this video, there’s no one there.”

“I’m still going to go around to ensure that they’re not at a different location. Yes, as of now, that is the report.”
