Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation and placed under disciplinary investigation following his decision to leave the national team camp after being left on the bench during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Norway.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain was an unused substitute in the encounter and was reportedly unhappy after warming up for about 30 minutes without being introduced by head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo subsequently left the national team camp three days later, a decision that prompted the Portuguese Football Federation to commence disciplinary proceedings over his conduct.

The veteran forward later apologised and said he was prepared to accept the disciplinary consequences arising from his actions.

Confirming the development, the FPF said Ronaldo was initially subjected to an automatic preventive suspension before a further non-automatic preventive suspension was imposed after formal disciplinary proceedings were initiated.

The federation said the proceedings were opened on October 9, 2026, to determine whether Ronaldo’s conduct amounted to a disciplinary offence under its regulations.

“Disciplinary proceedings were initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, by decision of the Non-Professional Section, on October 9, 2026, with the objective of ascertaining the potential disciplinary relevance of the facts reported on October 7, 2026,” the federation said.

It added that Ronaldo had been placed on preventive suspension while the matter was being investigated.

“Without prejudice to the automatic preventive suspension to which he was subject until the date of initiation, a non-automatic preventive suspension of the player was determined, and the proceedings were given urgent status,” the statement added.

According to the FPF, the case was forwarded on October 10 to its Disciplinary Instruction Committee for further investigation.

“The proceedings were sent, on October 10, 2026, to the Disciplinary Instruction Committee of the FPF, with publicity excluded until the end of the investigation,” it said.

The federation said Ronaldo’s conduct was being examined under Article 14, paragraph 2 of its disciplinary regulations.

The disciplinary process means Ronaldo’s immediate involvement with the national team will remain affected pending the outcome of the investigation and any further decision by the relevant FPF disciplinary bodies.

The development represents a rare disciplinary controversy involving Ronaldo, who has remained one of Portugal’s most influential players throughout a record-breaking international career.

Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal and has been central to the country’s major international successes.

The forward is also closing in on another personal milestone, with his career goal tally leaving him within reach of the 1,000-goal mark.
