The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol dispensed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, with priority given to public transport operators nationwide.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed the arrangement on Thursday at a press briefing addressing fuel prices and questions about petrol subsidies in Abuja.
Oyedele said the government would sell petrol at cost under the arrangement, maintaining that the discount did not amount to a subsidy.
“We are offering a discount on petrol dispensed by NNPC limited for the next 30 days in the first instance with priority for public transporters nationwide. So, it’s not a subsidy, government is just saying we sell to you at cost.”
The minister’s description of the 30-day period as “the first instance” left open the possibility of an extension, although he did not announce one in the remarks provided.
The announcement did not specify the discounted pump price, the size of the reduction, the participating outlets or the procedure public transport operators would follow to access the offer.
