Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to the fair, impartial and timely administration of justice, stressing that public confidence in the justice system depends on the integrity, independence and humanity with which justice is administered.

In her goodwill message marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, personally signed by her, Justice Kekere-Ekun said the milestone should serve as a moment for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey, the challenges already overcome and the work that still lies ahead.

“The Judiciary has a particularly important place in this national endeavour. As the guardian of the rule of law and an essential pillar of our constitutional democracy, the Judiciary remains committed to the fair, impartial and timely administration of justice,” she said.

She added that the strength of a nation should not be measured only by economic or material progress, but also by the quality of its institutions, the fairness with which its laws are administered and the confidence citizens place in those entrusted with public responsibility.

Justice Kekere-Ekun noted that Nigeria’s 66 years of nationhood had been marked by periods of difficulty and uncertainty, but also by resilience, creativity and faith in the country’s future.

“Our story has been marked by moments of difficulty and uncertainty, but also by remarkable resilience, creativity and an enduring faith in the promise of our nation.

“Through it all, the Nigerian spirit has remained a source of strength,” she said.

The CJN urged Nigerians to approach their differences with understanding and tolerance, maintaining that the country’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division when guided by mutual respect and a common purpose.

She also called on Nigerians to remember those whose sacrifices in different areas of national service had helped preserve the country’s freedom and democracy, urging citizens to contribute in their own ways towards leaving behind a stronger, more just and united Nigeria.

“On behalf of the entire Nigerian Judiciary and on my own behalf, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary.

“May the Federal Republic of Nigeria continue to prosper and may the hopes and aspirations of her people find greater fulfilment in the years ahead,” she said.
