The figures were released by the Debt Management Office (DMO) in its latest public debt data published on September 25, 2026. The official DMO publication does not attribute the figures to a particular individual, so it is safer to attribute the report to the DMO, rather than saying its Director-General, Patience Oniha, personally announced them.

Nigeria’s total public debt stock rose to N166.79 trillion as of June 30, 2026, representing an increase of about N7.44 trillion within three months, according to the latest public debt figures released by the Debt Management Office (DMO).

The DMO, in its public debt portfolio published on September 25, 2026, disclosed that the country’s debt increased by about 4.7 per cent from the N159.35 trillion recorded as of March 31, 2026.

In dollar terms, Nigeria’s total public debt stood at $120.93 billion at the end of June, compared with about $114.95 billion at the end of the first quarter.

A breakdown of the figures showed that domestic debt accounted for N91.59 trillion, representing 54.91 per cent of the total debt stock, while external debt stood at N75.20 trillion, or 45.09 per cent.

At the end of March 2026, domestic debt had stood at N87.40 trillion, while external debt was N71.95 trillion, indicating increases in both components during the second quarter.

The DMO figures further showed that the Federal Government accounted for approximately N152.77 trillion of the country’s total public debt. This comprised about N86.999 trillion in domestic debt and N65.774 trillion in external obligations.

States and the Federal Capital Territory accounted for the remaining N14.01 trillion, comprising approximately N4.591 trillion in domestic debt and N9.424 trillion in external debt.

On a year-on-year basis, Nigeria’s debt stock increased by about N14.39 trillion, or 9.4 per cent, from the N152.40 trillion recorded as of June 30, 2025.

The June 2025 figures showed domestic debt of N80.55 trillion and external obligations of N71.85 trillion. This means domestic debt increased by approximately N11.04 trillion, or 13.7 per cent, within one year, while external debt rose by about N3.35 trillion, or 4.7 per cent.

For the conversion of the external component into naira, the DMO applied the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official exchange rate of approximately N1,379.18 to $1 as of June 30, 2026.

The latest figures form part of the DMO’s periodic publication of Nigeria’s federal and sub-national domestic and external debt obligations.

The DMO’s official website confirms that the June 30, 2026 public debt report was published on September 25, 2026.
